General Information
The Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), located in Agrigento, is one of the most extraordinary archaeological parks in the Mediterranean and a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast historical area preserves the remains of ancient Akragas, one of the most powerful cities of the classical Greek world.
The site is celebrated for its remarkably intact Doric temples, each dedicated to various deities of the Greek pantheon. Dominating the landscape is the Temple of Concordia, considered one of the best-preserved ancient temples on Earth. Nearby, the Temple of Hera Lacinia, perched on the eastern ridge, offers stunning views over olive groves and the coastline. The oldest of the temples, the Temple of Heracles, and the dramatic ruins of the monumental Temple of Zeus, once among the largest temples ever built, further illustrate the grandeur of the ancient city.
Visitors can walk along the Sacred Way, and learn about ancient necropolis areas and fortification walls that reveal the strategic design of the ancient settlement. The entire archaeological park unfolds across a pristine Mediterranean landscape, dotted with almond and olive trees that accentuate its timeless beauty.
Whether visited in the quiet morning light or during a sunset tour—when the temples glow gold and amber—the Valley of the Temples remains one of Sicily’s most awe-inspiring cultural treasures.
