General Information
Set on the eastern coast of Sicily, Catania is a vibrant city forged by fire, earthquakes, and resilience. Almost entirely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, Catania today is a striking showcase of Etneo Baroque, where elegant architecture is shaped from dark volcanic stone sourced from nearby Mount Etna.
The historic center unfolds around Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the celebrated Fontana dell'Elefante, affectionately known as Liotru. Surrounding the square are architectural landmarks such as Catania Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Agatha, and the elegant Palazzo degli Elefanti, seat of the city hall.
Catania is also deeply connected to music and culture as the birthplace of composer Vincenzo Bellini, whose legacy still permeates the city’s atmosphere. Walking through its streets means experiencing a lively mix of history, daily life, and dramatic urban scenery, with Mount Etna constantly present on the horizon—an unmistakable UNESCO-heritage vibe shaped by nature and human creativity.
About the tour
This guided walking tour of Catania offers a rich and engaging introduction to the city’s artistic, historical, and cultural identity.
You will meet your licensed guide in the historic center and begin your exploration among Baroque palaces, churches, and wide lava-stone streets. A key highlight of the tour is the superb Via Crociferi, a UNESCO-recognized masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Lined with 17th- and 18th-century churches, monasteries, and sculpted façades, this elegant street represents the spiritual and artistic heart of post-earthquake Catania and is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque streets in Italy.
The walk continues through Piazza del Duomo and along Via Etnea, the city’s grand axis, offering striking perspectives toward Mount Etna and a lively glimpse into modern Catanese life. You will admire the exterior of Palazzo Biscari, one of the city’s most refined aristocratic residences, before reaching Ursino Castle, a powerful medieval fortress dramatically reshaped by lava flows.
Throughout the tour, your guide will connect architecture, history, volcanic events, and local traditions, offering a vivid and authentic portrait of Catania.
Optional Extension – Museo dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943
For those interested (except on Mondays), the tour can be extended—with a supplement—to include a visit to the Museo dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943. This immersive museum narrates what happened in Sicily before, during, and after the Allied landing in July 1943, using reconstructions, documents, and multimedia installations to bring this pivotal moment of World War II history to life.
